The Protestation Returns 1641-42 and other contemporary listings. Jeremy Gibson & Alan Dell

Nearly all the records listed in this guide relate to 1641 and 1642, generated in the tense months preceding and during the start of the Civil War. The Protestation Oath was a pledge of loyalty, ostensibly to the King but in fact to Parliament, which was supposed to be taken by every adult male. From around the same period there are other listings of Subsidies, Assessments and Grants which can be useful to the family historian. This guide contains a comprehensive list of all such records which are known to have survived for every county in England and Wales.
