First Name Variants. 2nd edition. Alan Bardsley
When searching for records of particular individuals in original documents or indexes, most researchers would be familiar with an Elizabeth appearing as a Betty or Bessy. The may be less familiar with it appearing as Tissy or Veta, and there are at least 230 other ways that Elizabeth has been recorded. Over time first names have suffered from many variations, both accidentally and deliberately introduced, sometimes making it difficult to track down a particular person. This book is a compilation of first name diminutives and variants, and links together some 8,000 variants linked to 1,300 names. Coverage is for the English-speaking world of the 17th to 19th centuries, together the commonest Welsh, Irish and Scottish links.
